What is hydrosalpinx?

Hydrosalpinx is a condition where the fallopian tube gets blocked and filled with fluid. This fluid prevents the egg and sperm from meeting and can also affect the chances of embryo implantation. It is one of the important causes of infertility in women.

Common Symptoms of Hydrosalpinx

Not all women notice symptoms, but some may experience:

  • Pelvic pain or discomfort
  • Unusual vaginal discharge
  • Difficulty in conceiving
  • Pain during periods or intercourse

Sometimes hydrosalpinx is only discovered during fertility testing.

Causes of Hydrosalpinx

Hydrosalpinx often results from:

  1. Previous pelvic infections
  2. Sexually transmitted infections
  3. Endometriosis
  4. Prior abdominal or pelvic surgeries
  5. Tuberculosis (in some cases in India)
