What is IUI Treatment?

At HomeIVF, we help couples who want to start fertility treatments. One option we offer is IUI, a less invasive procedure where a man's sperm is placed directly into the uterus to increase the chances of pregnancy. IUI is often recommended for couples facing unexplained infertility, mild male issues, or those using fertility medications to help with ovulation. The IUI success rate can vary based on age and infertility factors, but it can be a very effective treatment for many couples.

Why Consider IUI?

What is IUI treatment, and how can it help couples struggling with fertility? Generally, IUI is the best solution for most couples, especially those with unexplained infertility or low sperm count. At HomeIVF, our goal is to help the couple conceive by providing the best treatment for them. This method is also suitable for women who have minor endometriosis or in cases where medications such as Clomid can be used to stimulate ovulation but without any luck for months.

The IUI Procedure with HomeIVF

Once you have gone through your initial testing and consultations online at HomeIVF, it's time to start the IUI process. You will be asked to inform your dedicated counsellor at HomeIVF on the first day of your menstrual cycle to book your next procedure. This is how it goes:

  1. Natural IUI: We see you at approximately Day 10 of your cycle for an ultrasound scan, assuming you're not taking fertility medications. This will allow us to look at the lining of your uterus and check on the development of the follicles. The follicles are fluid-filled sacs that contain your eggs.

  2. Clomid IUI: For example, if a patient starts with Clomid when she is on her period to induce ovulation, then she will start on the medication on Day 2 of her cycle and continue through Day 6. She will return around Day 10 to have an ultrasound to reassess the number of developing follicles and evaluate the uterine lining.

  3. Gonadotrophin IUI: Regular scans with this cycle will monitor the activity of your ovaries in response to the injections of gonadotrophin (follicle-stimulating hormone). When the time comes, you will receive an hCG injection that will induce the release of the egg, typically 36-44 hours before insemination.

On the day of the IUI, the HomeIVF Partner Clinic will prepare a sperm sample from your partner or donor. The prepared sperm is introduced into the uterus with a thin catheter. Some women can feel mild cramping. You will need to rest briefly after insemination and then resume your day.

What to Expect After IUI

During the following week, you will be required to come to our hospital for blood testing to confirm whether ovulation has or has not occurred. If you are menstruating, then you would be able to discuss with the HomeIVF team further about the need for additional cycles of treatment or to proceed with fertility treatments like IVF. If you are pregnant, you can have an ultrasound scan confirmation and, subsequently, follow up on the progress of your pregnancy.

IUI Success Rates

The success rates of IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) depend on several factors, including age, the cause of infertility, sperm quality, and the number of attempts. For women under 35, the success rate typically ranges between 10-20% per cycle, as per global ART (Assisted Reproductive Technology) standards.

However, it's crucial to understand that every individual’s fertility journey is unique, and outcomes can vary. At HomeIVF, our partner clinics prioritize transparency and personalized care, offering an honest assessment of your chances based on your medical history and ensuring adherence to ethical guidelines under Indian law. Our dedicated team supports you every step of the way, combining expertise with compassion to help you achieve your dream of parenthood.

Side Effects of IUI Treatment

Are you considering IUI treatment side effects? Generally, side effects are rare, but they may occur, particularly if medication is used to stimulate ovulation. For example, in this case, most women who take Clomid experience hot flashes, abdominal discomfort, and headaches. When gonadotropin injections are used, there is a risk of bloating and nausea, and maybe even the chance of developing OHSS. But don’t worry, the experts at HomeIVF will monitor your treatment closely to work along with you to keep complications as minor as possible.

IUI After 40: Is It Possible?

Are you over 40 and thinking about IUI? The chances of IUI could be lower in women of this age group because the chances of conceiving become less with age. However, if you have a good ovarian reserve and respond well to drugs, the facility IUI is still an option for you. It’s important to assess your overall health and fertility before making a decision. If IUI doesn't work after several attempts, it may be time to consider IVF as a next step. Ask your IVF Counselor and IVF Specialist at HomeIVF to understand the treatment plan for your situation. Your health and well-being are the top priorities in this journey.
